Suffolk Wildfire Ravages Dunwich Heath, Sparks Rewilding Debate

A 371‑acre wildfire that began on the RSPB's Minsmere reserve on Wednesday spread to the National Trust‑owned Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, leaving the heathland in total devastation. Firefighters reduced the number of appliances tackling the blaze from 14 to eight after creating firebreaks, and no fatalities were reported.

The National Trust launched an emergency fundraising appeal, with director‑general Hilary McGrady describing the loss of rare wildlife such as nightjars, skylarks, the Dartford warbler and the silver‑studded blue butterfly as "heartbreaking". Deputy chief fire officer Henry Griffin highlighted the rapid spread of fire through heather and shrubbery.

Local residents and campaign groups have blamed the RSPB's rewilding agenda for creating a "tinderbox" environment, criticizing land‑management practices and calling for better stewardship of the countryside.
