Sugar addiction mechanisms compared to opioids in neurological studies

Research indicates that sugar consumption activates the same dopamine reward pathways and opioid receptors in the brain as heroin. Neuroscientists studying laboratory animals have observed that intermittent access to sugar can lead to binge eating, cravings, and withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety and tremors.

In the brain's nucleus accumbens, sugar triggers dopamine release and alters opioid receptor sensitivity, causing the brain to adapt similarly to addictive substances. Studies also noted cross-sensitization, where subjects accustomed to sugar showed heightened responses to amphetamines and a greater preference for alcohol.

In the Czech Republic, statistics show an average annual sugar consumption of 30.8 kg per capita, or approximately 84 grams per day. This figure is roughly 1.7 times the limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
