Sugar consumption impacts skin aging and oral health

Excessive consumption of added sugars is linked to both metabolic deterioration and dental issues. High glucose intake over long periods can trigger oxidative stress, inflammation, and a process called glycation. During glycation, sugars bind to proteins such as collagen and elastin, which are essential for skin firmness and elasticity, potentially contributing to an aged appearance.

Regarding oral health, sugar fuels harmful bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, which converts sugar into acids that erode tooth enamel and cause cavities. Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome—a community of approximately 700 microbial species—is crucial. While some microbes are pathogenic, beneficial bacteria such as Veillonella and Actinomyces can help prevent harmful strains from establishing themselves in the mouth.
