Sugar consumption impacts skin health and gut microbiome

Research highlights the multifaceted impact of sugar consumption on both physical appearance and internal biological systems. Reducing added sugar intake may support skin health by managing inflammation and acne, which are often linked to high glycemic loads and insulin spikes. Furthermore, limiting sugar can help protect collagen and elastin from glycation—a process where sugar molecules bond to proteins, creating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that compromise skin elasticity.

Beyond aesthetics, a study published in the journal Nature indicates that combining sugar consumption with antibiotic use can significantly alter the gut microbiome. By studying patients receiving prolonged antibiotic treatment, researchers found that sugar can exacerbate disruptions to the trillions of microorganisms in the digestive system. A healthy, diverse microbiome is essential for digestion, vitamin production, and immune function, and its disruption may increase vulnerability to dangerous infections.
