Sugar glider care: diet, social needs, and health
Sugar gliders are highly social, nocturnal marsupials that require specialized care to maintain their health and well-being in captivity.
Dietary management is critical; owners should avoid feeding them human foods like fried chicken, which can be lethal due to high fat, salt, and seasoning content. Their natural diet consists of nectar, sap, pollen, and insects. Because they are nocturnal, feeding should ideally occur around dusk or during the night to mimic their natural rhythms.
Socially, sugar gliders thrive on interaction and attention. In the wild, they live in colonies, and in captivity, they benefit from regular social engagement to prevent stress, depression, and behavioral issues. While they are fastidious groomers, they can technically be susceptible to fleas if exposed to certain environments, though this is uncommon.
