Sugar Glider Care: Risks of Pine Enclosures and Yogurt Treats

Pine wood and shavings are generally not recommended for sugar glider habitats. The volatile aromatic hydrocarbons in pine, especially phenols, can irritate the animals' delicate respiratory tracts, cause liver damage, trigger allergic skin reactions, and lead to digestive problems if ingested. Even kiln‑dried pine may retain enough volatile oils to pose health risks.

Yogurt treats are also unsuitable for sugar gliders. These marsupials are lactose intolerant and lack the enzymes needed to digest dairy. Consuming yogurt can cause diarrhea, bloating, and other digestive upset, while the added sugars contribute to obesity, dental decay, and nutritional imbalances that reduce appetite for essential foods.

Pet owners are advised to use safe, untreated bedding materials such as paper or aspen, and to limit treats to sugar‑glider‑appropriate options like fresh fruit, insects, or specially formulated commercial treats that contain no dairy or excess sugar.
