Sugar glider care: safety risks and nutritional guidelines
Sugar gliders require specific care regarding their environment and diet to maintain health in captivity. Experts advise against letting sugar gliders outdoors due to significant risks, including predation by birds, cats, or dogs, exposure to extreme temperatures leading to hypothermia or heatstroke, the high potential for escape, and contact with environmental toxins.
Regarding nutrition, sugar gliders can safely consume green peas as part of a balanced diet. Peas provide vitamins A, C, and K, minerals such as potassium and magnesium, fiber for digestion, and small amounts of protein. However, peas should be offered in moderation and should never serve as a dietary staple, as a proper diet must replicate the diverse nutritional intake of their natural habitat, which includes nectar, pollen, insects, fruits, and sap.
