Sugar industry faces crisis in Pakistan and India
The sugar industry in Pakistan is facing significant financial distress, with the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) reporting losses of Rs98 billion (US$1.03 billion). The crisis is driven by a 1.3 million tonne sugar surplus and a domestic price decline of up to 25% over the past year. The PSMA North Zone has requested approval to export 800,000 tonnes of surplus sugar to mitigate mounting storage and financing costs. At least 12 mills in Pakistan have already shut down due to these losses.
In Sindh, Pakistan, the Sindh Abadgar Board has called on Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to resume official notifications for the sugarcane crushing season and to fix purchase prices. The board noted that the provincial government has not issued these notifications since 2025, leaving growers vulnerable to mill interests.
In India, Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad has urged the Uttar Pradesh government to increase the sugarcane price to ₹600 per quintal. Azad cited rising costs for fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, diesel, and labor as primary reasons for the demand, stating that current prices do not allow farmers to earn adequate profits.
