Mexico is facing a severe crisis in its cargo transportation sector driven by rising violence and insecurity on highways. According to a report by risk management firm Overhaul, 76% of cargo thefts during the second quarter of 2026 involved violence. These incidents are heavily concentrated, with 86.3% occurring in just ten states, most notably in the State of Mexico, Puebla, and Guanajuato. The most frequently targeted goods include food and beverages, followed by miscellaneous items, auto parts, and fuel.

The National Association of Transporters (ANTAC) reports that this violence has led to a critical shortage of approximately 100,000 drivers, some of whom are fleeing the country. In January alone, the association recorded 20 missing drivers. David Estévez Gamboa, president of ANTAC, has warned of a potential national mobilization involving total highway closures in September 2026 if security and extortion issues are not addressed. He specifically highlighted concerns regarding extortion by certain police elements on federal roads.

Separately, the organization Causa en Común has raised concerns regarding the reliability of official crime statistics. Their analysis of the first half of 2026 identified inconsistencies in the reporting of 10 high-impact crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, and extortion, suggesting a need for further audits or explanations of statistical variations.
