Sugar prices drop 20 percent as India targets hoarding
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced that ex-mill sugar prices have dropped by approximately 20 percent. This decline is expected to reach retail markets gradually through the supply chain.
Government investigations into sugar mill stocks revealed that recent price surges were driven by hoarding and speculation rather than actual shortages. Physical verification of mills showed that several facilities held more sugar than they had reported in their monthly documents.
To prevent artificial shortages and ‘short selling’ by mills, the government will transition from a monthly quota system to a fortnightly quota system starting in September. Under this new regulation, mills must sell at least 40 percent of their allocated quota in the first week, with the remainder available in the second week.
