Sugar recall: 1.7 million pounds of products pulled due to wheat risk
A Minnesota-based manufacturer has initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million pounds of light brown sugar and powdered sugar due to potential wheat kernel contamination. The recall affects products distributed under the United, Good & Gather, and Crystal Sugar brands.
The FDA has classified this as a Class II recall, noting that while the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences for those with wheat allergies, the probability of serious health consequences is remote. The contamination poses a significant risk to consumers with wheat sensitivities or allergies.
The affected products were distributed across eight U.S. states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Specific items include 50-pound bags of United Light Brown Sugar and United 6X Powdered Sugar, 2-pound bags of Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar and Powdered Sugar, and 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar. Consumers are advised to check specific lot numbers, such as the MHD26223 to MHD26230 series, to determine if their products are included.
