UK sugar‑rationing study links early‑life sugar restriction to lower cancer and dementia risk
A natural‑experiment study using the end of UK sugar rationing in 1953 examined 64,761 participants from the UK Biobank born between 1951 and 1956. Researchers found that limiting sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life was associated with a substantial reduction in several adult cancers – up to 69% for liver and biliary tract tumours and 36% for breast cancer – and with biological markers of slower ageing, such as longer leukocyte telomeres and lower Granzyme B levels.
The same cohort showed a lower risk of all‑cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease for those exposed to early‑life sugar restriction, with hazard ratios around 0.77‑0.79 and an average delay in dementia onset of about 2.5 years. Brain imaging revealed greater grey‑matter volume and better processing‑speed performance, partly mediated by reduced diabetes and hypertension.
Separate reports note that artificial sweeteners and low‑calorie sugar substitutes may not be healthier; a Tufts University meta‑analysis linked them to higher fasting insulin, HbA1c and possible gut‑microbiota disruption. Health agencies such as the WHO continue to advise limiting free sugars, and practical tips for reducing post‑meal glucose spikes and choosing natural low‑sugar sweeteners are also highlighted.
