Sugarcane by-products converted to organic soil for Spratly Islands

Scientists have developed a method to transform sugarcane factory by-products into organic microbial substrates designed to improve coral sand soil in the Spratly Islands. Led by the Institute of Biotechnology and researcher Dinh Thi Thu Trang, the project aims to support vegetable and tree cultivation in challenging maritime environments.

The production process utilizes a two-stage composting method combined with functional microorganisms capable of nitrogen fixation, phosphorus dissolution, and cellulose decomposition. This substrate is intended to improve soil structure, increase moisture retention, and enhance nutrient availability in coral sand.

To date, 50 tons of the preparation have been produced and handed over to Navy units in Regions 2 and 4 for testing. Experimental models involving green vegetables, fruit trees, and various coastal plant species have shown positive results regarding germination rates, survival rates, and growth speeds.
