Sugary Drinks Linked to Higher Hypertension Risk and Sugar‑Free Diets Disrupt Gut Health
A long‑term cohort study of over 25,000 participants followed for up to 25 years found that frequent consumption of sugary beverages in childhood and adulthood markedly raises the chance of developing high blood pressure as an adult. The research, led by Vasanti Malik of the University of Toronto and Harvard, reported a 52 % higher risk of hypertension in people who drank two or more sugary drinks per day, with additional risk increments for each extra serving of soda or sports drinks. Replacing sugary drinks with whole fruit reduced that risk by about 20 %.
In a separate animal experiment, researchers at the Dasman Institute for Diabetes (Kuwait) fed mice a completely sugar‑free diet for 16 weeks. The sugar‑free mice showed altered gut microbiota, signs of insulin resistance, and fatty‑liver changes, despite similar body weight to control mice. The findings suggest that eliminating sugar entirely may have unintended metabolic consequences and underscore the complexity of dietary carbohydrate balance.
Both studies highlight that the form and amount of sugar in the diet can have significant cardiovascular and metabolic effects.
