Suica Penguin mascot prepares for retirement with commemorative events

The Suica Penguin, the long-standing mascot for JR East’s Suica IC card, is preparing to retire at the end of fiscal year 2026. In anticipation of the character “flying to a new place” in March 2027, various commemorative activities and collaborations have emerged.

At Tokyo Station, vending machines featuring a “historical advertisement gallery” have become a viral sensation on social media. These machines display past designs of the character, prompting nostalgic and emotional reactions from commuters.

Additionally, a limited-edition collaboration has been launched with the historic Nagano-based spice retailer Nemoto Yawata Yasugoro. The collaboration features a three-can shichimi (seven-spice) set accompanied by original stickers. The 5,000 limited sets are available at NewDays and KIOSK locations within Nagano Prefecture. This follows JR East’s recent initiative to hold a vote for new character designs to succeed the current mascot.
