Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month recognized in Canada and US

September is recognized as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, a period dedicated to reducing stigma and increasing mental health support. The Canadian Mental Health Association and the World Health Organization observe this month alongside World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

In British Columbia, the BC Coroners Service has proposed five recommendations to lower youth suicide rates, including a province-wide risk-reduction framework and improved training for healthcare workers. Data from the Vancouver Island Crisis Society indicates that suicide is a significant concern, with the organization receiving thousands of calls related to mental health and suicide.

In the United States, the Governor of Massachusetts has issued a proclamation for the month, highlighting suicide as a major public health challenge. Statistics cited indicate that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death nationally and the 2nd leading cause for individuals aged 10 to 34. Massachusetts maintains a Suicide Prevention Program to support community agencies and provide training for professionals and caregivers.
