A fatal rockfall occurred at the Sukari gold mine, Egypt’s largest gold producer, resulting in one death and five injuries. The incident took place within a tunnel in an underground working section in the country’s eastern desert region.

Operations in the affected area have been suspended while an investigation is conducted. Egyptian Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy has ordered a commission to determine the exact causes of the collapse, review health and safety protocols, and recommend preventative measures.

The injured workers were transported to a hospital in Marsa Alam and are reported to be in stable condition. The Sukari mine is a critical economic asset, producing approximately 500,000 ounces of gold annually and generating hundreds of millions of dollars for the Egyptian economy. The site is operated by Sukari Gold Mines, a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti.
