Sukhbir Singh Badal attacked at Nanded gurdwara
Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, was attacked on Thursday at the Mata Sahib Gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra. The assailant, identified as a 62-year-old Nihang named Jaspal Singh, allegedly attempted to stab Badal with a kirpan while he was visiting the shrine with his family.
Security personnel intervened to prevent more serious injuries, though Badal sustained a wound to his right hand that required stitches. Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was on special security duty, was also injured during the struggle to subdue the attacker. Badal was subsequently taken to a private hospital, where officials stated his injuries are not life-threatening.
The incident has drawn widespread political condemnation from leaders across India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who contacted Badal’s wife, MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, to inquire about his health. Intelligence agencies are investigating the attack to determine if it is linked to broader political or religious networks. This event marks the second such incident for Badal, following an assassination attempt in Amritsar in December 2024.
