Sukhbir Singh Badal attacked with kirpan at Nanded Gurdwara
Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former Punjab deputy chief minister, was attacked with a 'kirpan' (ceremonial dagger) at the Mata Sahib Gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on August 13, 2026. The assailant, identified as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, a member of the Nihang order, was taken into custody following the incident.
Badal sustained a wound to his right forearm that required surgery to repair a tendon and ulnar artery nerve. He was discharged from Yashosai Hospital on Friday. During his recovery, Badal alleged that the attack was part of a 'larger conspiracy' intended to disrupt communal harmony and political stability in Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
Inspector Santosh Kendre of the Maharashtra Police was credited with preventing a more fatal outcome by intervening during the assault. Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Badal’s wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, to express their concern. The attacker reportedly claimed he acted on a 'divine order' from Waheguru.
