Sukhoi-30MKI plays key role in India's Operation Sindoor

In May 2025, the Indian Air Force conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The operation targeted terrorist locations within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

While the Rafale fighter jet received significant media attention due to its advanced electronic warfare systems and long-range cruise missiles, reports indicate that the Sukhoi-30MKI played a critical multi-role function during the mission. The Sukhoi-30MKI utilized a diverse weapon configuration, including Rampage air-launched ballistic missiles for precision strikes, indigenous Astra Mark-1 missiles for beyond-visual-range air combat, and R-73 missiles for close-range engagements.

The Sukhoi-30MKI’s ability to perform both air defense and deep-strike missions allowed it to provide air cover while engaging ground targets from a standoff distance, minimizing exposure to enemy air defenses. Other platforms, such as the Mirage-2000 using Spice bombs, also participated in the operation.
