Russian Su-57 fighter jet reportedly burns at Akhtubinsk airbase
A Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet reportedly caught fire at the Akhtubinsk military airfield in the Astrakhan region on October 29, 2026. According to Ukrainian open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysts from the project Absoliutno Nadiine Dzherelo, the incident occurred during engine startup, leading to an emergency situation that caused the aircraft to burn while still on the ground.
Satellite imagery analyzed by OSINT sources shows burn marks in a parking area typically used by Su-57 aircraft. While the imagery confirms fire damage, it does not definitively prove the total destruction of the jet. As of late October, Russian authorities had not officially confirmed the loss.
This incident marks the fourth reported loss or significant damage to a Su-57 in 2026. Previous incidents include two Su-57s reportedly hit by Ukrainian drones at the Shagol airfield in the Chelyabinsk region in April, and another aircraft that reportedly crashed in the Moscow region in July due to a friendly fire incident.
