Indonesian Sukhoi Su-30MK2 overruns runway at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport
An Indonesian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighter jet overran runway 13 at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros, South Sulawesi, on Monday, August 24, 2026. The incident occurred during a simulated take-off as part of a series of test flights following a major maintenance overhaul.
Air Force spokesperson First Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana confirmed that the aircraft's braking system failed to function optimally, causing the jet to overshoot the end of the runway by approximately 30 meters. The aircraft came to rest on the grass near the airport's perimeter fence. While reports indicated smoke and a small fire in the surrounding dry grass, the Air Force confirmed that all crew members were safe and no injuries were reported.
The aircraft has been towed to a maintenance hangar for thorough inspection. Despite the incident, airport authorities confirmed that commercial flight operations remained normal, with traffic diverted to runway 03-21.
Separately, reports indicated a second incident involving a Cassa aircraft on Tuesday, August 25, which also overran a runway at the same airport, though on a different strip.
