Sulawesi authorities probe illegal land-trading network in Loeha forest

Authorities in Sulawesi are investigating a potential illegal land-trading network following the discovery of forest encroachment in Loeha Village, Luwu Timur Regency. The Sulawesi Regional Forestry Law Enforcement Center (Balai Gakkum LHK) is looking beyond the initial arrest of three individuals—identified as AR, AI, and AW—who were caught red-handed on August 3, 2026, for planting approximately 1,500 pepper plants on 1.5 hectares of protected forest.

Investigators are now probing allegations of illegal land sales or compensation practices involving previous occupants. This suggests a recurring pattern of illegal land occupation and transfer within the protected area.

The investigation has drawn public attention due to opposition from a group calling itself the Pepper Farmers Association (APL), which has advocated for the release of the suspects. Officials have noted the suspicious timing of these defense efforts as they work to uncover the broader network of those responsible for the illegal land transfers.
