Sulfates in personal care products and their impact on skin

Sulfates, also known as surfactants, are cleansing and foaming ingredients used in various beauty and household products, including body wash, shampoo, conditioner, face cleansers, and toothpaste. Their primary function is to help water mix with oil and grime to facilitate the removal of dirt, sweat, and oil from the skin.

While effective at cleansing, some sulfate-based formulas can be harsh for frequent use. Aggressive cleansing may strip the skin of its natural moisture, leading to feelings of dryness, tightness, or discomfort. Consequently, many consumers opt for sulfate-free alternatives. These milder formulas are designed to cleanse gently while supporting the skin's natural moisture barrier, making them a preferred choice for individuals with dry skin or those seeking a less stripping daily routine.
