Sullivan County health officials issue rabies and measles alerts

Sullivan County Public Health officials have issued warnings regarding two separate health concerns: a confirmed rabies case in a bat and rising regional measles activity.

A bat found in the Livingston Manor area recently tested positive for the rabies virus, marking the first confirmed rabies exposure incident in the county this year. Health officials are urging residents to avoid wildlife and ensure pets are up to date on vaccinations. A vaccination clinic for dogs, cats, and ferrets is scheduled for September 16 at the Narrowsburg Fire House.

Additionally, the county is monitoring measles activity in neighboring Pennsylvania. While there are currently no confirmed measles cases within Sullivan County, Public Health Director Dr. Jesse Moore stated that officials are tracking vaccination rates, travel patterns, and community transmission risks. Residents are encouraged to stay current on vaccinations, particularly to protect infants who are too young to be immunized.
