Sultan Al-Barkani rejects movement to restore GPC role

Sultan bin Saeed Al-Barkani, Speaker of the House and Assistant Secretary-General of the General People's Congress (GPC), has rejected the emergence of a movement titled the ‘Movement to Restore the Role of the General People's Congress.’ This movement is being led by Muammar al-Irani, the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

In a message addressed to al-Irani, Al-Barkani argued that the initiative lacks official organizational status and institutional mandate. He cautioned against creating decision-making centers outside the party's established structures, stating that restoring party unity should not begin with ‘impersonating the party’ or turning a personal initiative into an official reference.

Al-Barkani emphasized that al-Irani does not hold an organizational position within the GPC that allows him to lead a movement in the party's name. He called upon the Presidential Leadership Council and other constitutional bodies to prevent the use of state positions to deepen divisions within the party. Al-Barkani urged the GPC's elected General Committee to convene an organizational meeting to manage political and organizational work through official channels, noting that party unity is essential for the national struggle against the Houthi militia.
