Sultan Nazrin calls for protection of Muslim identity against global influences

Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, has called for urgent efforts to address challenges facing Muslim identity and the unity of the ummah. Speaking at the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebration in Ipoh, the Sultan noted that global influences—including social media, popular culture, and modern lifestyles—are increasingly shaping the mindsets of the younger generation.

He emphasized the need for wise approaches to balance modernity with religious principles to prevent a crisis of identity. The Sultan also highlighted that internal divisions, such as political, sectarian, and racial differences, alongside the pursuit of wealth and status, are undermining the spirit of brotherhood (ukhuwah).

To strengthen the community, the Sultan urged Islamic leaders and organizations to reduce political disputes and instead focus on positive sectors such as Islamic education, the halal industry, Islamic finance, digital dakwah, and the strengthening of family institutions. He stated that a strong Muslim identity is built through a continuous process of firm faith, knowledge, character, and righteous deeds.
