Sultan Nazrin warns of manners crisis among Malays and Muslims
Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, the Sultan of Perak and Chairman of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI), has warned that the Malay community and Muslims in Malaysia are facing a crisis of manners (adab). Speaking at the 75th MKI meeting in Putrajaya, he stated that the collapse of a society often begins with the erosion of its values and morals.
The Sultan expressed concern over the increasing trend of debates and discussions turning into disrespectful confrontations. He noted that differences of opinion are frequently being handled through insults, the spreading of unverified news, and the exposure of personal shame, which can lead to hostility.
To address this, the Sultan emphasized the importance of cultivating a culture of listening before answering, understanding before judging, and verifying before spreading information. He called for the strengthening of 'syura' (consultation) and etiquette within families, educational institutions, mosques, and administration to ensure a mature and wise society.
