Sultan of Dar Ouaddaï calls for peace amid transhumance challenges
In Chad, the Sultan of Dar Ouaddaï, His Majesty Chérif Abdelhadi Mahadi, has issued a call for peace regarding the seasonal movement of livestock, known as transhumance. During a press conference in Abéché on October 5, 2026, the Sultan addressed the challenges posed by the early migration of herders toward the south, a trend driven by scarce rainfall in certain provinces.
To prevent potential conflicts between herders and farmers as livestock seek new pastures in agricultural zones, the Sultan—acting as president of the Social Cohesion and Cultural Development Commission of the High Council of Territorial Collectivities (HCCT)—has called for a general mobilization of local leaders, including canton, tribal, and village chiefs. He emphasized the necessity of dialogue and awareness to ensure peaceful coexistence and to protect the region's social harmony.
