Sultan of Selangor emphasizes cooperation between religious and political leaders
Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has called for a complementary relationship between religious scholars (ulama) and political leaders (umara) to uphold Islam. Speaking at the Multaqa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah event, the Sultan noted that while their roles differ, they must strengthen one another. He described the role of the monarchy as providing institutional patronage and support, while scholars should provide truthful advice free from conflicting interests.
The Sultan emphasized that a healthy relationship between these two groups should not preclude constructive criticism, but must instead maintain etiquette, respect jurisdictions, and prioritize the interests of the community. He identified three main pillars of the Selangor Sultanate's legacy in empowering Islam: the continuity of governance, support for a comprehensive education system, and the establishment of institutions that translate Sharia law into policy, fatwas, and public services.
Additionally, the Sultan urged scholars to avoid relying on unverified information from short videos and instead refer to authoritative sources and recognized teachers. During the event, he also launched several publications, including books on the history of the Sheikhul Islam and Selangor Muftis, a compilation of fatwa articles, and the Selangor State Mufti Department's e-Fatwa system.
