Sultan of Sokoto reaffirms political neutrality ahead of 2027 elections
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has reaffirmed his commitment to political neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections. On September 28, 2026, the Sultan received Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his palace in Sokoto. This follows a previous visit by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council on September 14, 2026.
In a separate effort to promote national stability, the NSCIA organized a national prayer session at the Abuja National Mosque. NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede stated the event was intended to seek divine guidance for the country and its leaders rather than to support specific political parties. Oloyede emphasized that praying for the nation is both a religious and civic responsibility, urging citizens to complement prayer with actions that promote peace and development.
