Spain's Sumar party faces leadership contest ahead of July assembly

Spain's left‑wing platform Movimiento Sumar is set to hold its third general assembly in three years on 11 July, a meeting intended to renew its leadership after a series of resignations and internal disputes. Spokesperson in the Congress, Verónica Martínez Barbero, previously said she could not refuse a collective decision to lead the party, and later announced that she and State Secretary for Social Rights Rosa Martínez would run for the coordination post. The candidacy window closes on 30 June, with official lists to be published on 5 July.

The party is still grappling with the fallout from the resignation of former organization secretary Laura Moreno, who accused current coordinator Lara Hernández of mistreatment of staff, prompting an internal investigation. The leadership struggle is seen as critical for Sumar's role in the governing coalition, as its stability influences negotiations with the Socialists and other junior partners.
