Sumar faces leadership crisis amid potential early elections in Spain

The Spanish left-wing coalition Sumar is facing internal instability and a leadership vacuum as the possibility of early elections looms. Following Yolanda Díaz’s decision not to run again, the four constituent parties—IU, En Comú Podem, Más Madrid, and Movimiento Sumar—are racing to define a new brand, potentially ‘Frente Amplio’, and select a candidate.

Political tensions are rising within the coalition. Former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau has signaled a willingness to return to the political front line if requested by a united left, a move that has caused friction within her own party, Barcelona en Comú. Simultaneously, Podemos is attempting to gain ground; MEP Irene Montero has launched her candidacy through open primaries, and there are indications of potential coordination between Montero and Colau.

As pressure mounts for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to potentially call elections as early as November 29, the coalition members are holding urgent meetings to finalize their structure. The current lack of a unified leadership and clear identity poses a significant challenge to the group's ability to compete effectively against other political forces.
