Sumar invites Podemos to join unified progressive electoral platform

Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun, representing the Sumar coalition, has extended an invitation to the Podemos party to join a unified progressive platform for the upcoming general elections. Urtasun stated that Sumar is building a broad political platform to revalidate the current coalition government and emphasized, “If Podemos wants to participate in this effort now, no one is left out.”

Urtasun noted that for an alliance to occur, Podemos must first provide an unequivocal message of intent to join a coalition aimed at revalidating the government. This follows a period of criticism from Podemos toward the current administration and their split from Sumar in late 2023.

If an agreement is reached, the parties will discuss candidate selection methodologies, including potential primaries suggested by former minister Irene Montero. Sumar aims to replicate the coalition structure seen in the July 23 elections, which included regional parties such as Chunta Aragonesista, Més per Mallorca, and Compromís. Sumar expects to reveal its new electoral brand and candidate shortly.
