Sumatra experiences surge in hotspots with thousands of points detected

Thousands of hotspots have been detected across Sumatra, with monitoring data from October 7 and 8, 2026, showing a significant presence of heat points. South Sumatra remains the most affected province, recording over 3,600 to 3,800 hotspots.

Other provinces reporting high numbers include Jambi, Bangka Belitung, and Lampung. In Riau, the number of hotspots has risen to 19 points, with Kuantan Singingi recording the highest concentration. Other affected areas in Riau include Siak, Indragiri Hulu, Rokan Hilir, and Dumai.

The BMKG has warned that the air quality in Riau is being impacted by potential haze, leading to hazy conditions in the mornings and afternoons. Residents have also been advised to watch for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several districts.
