Sumatran elephant calf born in South Sumatra conservation center

A male Sumatran elephant calf was born at the Jalur 21 Elephant Conservation Center in Padang Sugihan, South Sumatra, on August 17, coinciding with Indonesia's Independence Day.

The calf, an endangered species, was born to a mother named Lestari and a father named Gapula. According to the Ministry of Forestry and the South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the calf was born healthy and was able to stand and nurse shortly after birth.

Due to high temperatures in the open conservation area, medical teams and mahouts have implemented intensive 24-hour monitoring. Care includes providing adequate shelter, ensuring constant access to water for bathing and drinking, and supplementing the mother's diet with essential nutrients and fruit to aid recovery.
