Sumatra tiger captured in Indonesia after village disturbances
Authorities in West Sumatra have captured a young female Sumatra tiger that had been causing disturbances in a local village. The tiger, estimated to be between two and three years old, had been entering residential areas, preying on goats and dogs, and roaming near local schools.
To resolve the conflict, the BKSDA conservation authority set a trap using a goat carcass as bait. The tiger was caught within an hour of the trap being set. Following a night of monitoring by residents and officials, the animal was transported for medical examination and is expected to be released back into the wild soon.
The Sumatra tiger is the smallest of the surviving tiger subspecies and is listed as endangered by the IUCN, with only approximately 400 individuals remaining in the wild. Shrinking habitats have led to increased human-wildlife conflicts in the region, including a fatal attack on a coffee farmer in July.
