Sumatran tiger captured in Riau following human attacks

The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) has captured a Sumatran tiger, measuring approximately 2 meters in length, in Sungai Ara Village, Pelalawan Regency. The capture occurred near an industrial forest concession area where previous interactions resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

The tiger is currently being held temporarily at the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution in Kampar Regency. This location was chosen to facilitate observation, monitoring, and potential future evacuation due to limited rehabilitation cage availability at the Sumatran Tiger Rehabilitation Center in West Sumatra.

Authorities are currently awaiting DNA test results from Gadjah Mada University to determine if this specific individual is a ‘man-eater’ involved in the recent attacks. If the tests indicate the tiger was not responsible for the human fatalities, officials will consider releasing the animal back into the wild.
