Attica Zoological Park welcomes three Sumatran tiger cubs

Three Sumatran tiger cubs, two males and one female, were born at the Attica Zoological Park near Athens, Greece. The cubs, aged approximately two months, recently underwent their first veterinary examinations, which included receiving vaccinations and identification microchips.

The Sumatran tiger is classified as critically endangered, with an estimated population of only 400 individuals remaining in the wild on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The species faces severe threats from habitat loss due to forest clearing, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

Zoo officials stated that these births are part of a broader global effort by zoological parks to maintain a safety population. This genetic management aims to provide a backup population that could potentially allow for the reintroduction of the species into the wild in the future. The cubs were born to a mother named Toba and a father named Argos, the latter of whom passed away from cancer.
