Sumatran tiger sighting leads to school closures and safety warnings in Indragiri Hilir, Riau

A protected Sumatran tiger was reported near the village of Sungai Danai in the Pulau Burung district of Indragiri Hilir, Riau. The animal allegedly attacked a cow, increasing fear among residents.

Village head Halim appealed for heightened vigilance and sent a formal request to the Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKSDA) Riau for an emergency response. Police chief Danu Hidayat warned villagers not to travel alone and to report any further sightings, while coordinating with the district education office. In response, the district education authority ordered a suspension of face‑to‑face classes, shifting all teaching to online learning until the area is deemed safe.
