Sumba traditional weavers embrace digital markets
In East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, traditional weaving is undergoing a digital transformation. The expansion of telecommunications infrastructure, including 96 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers managed by BAKTI Komdigi across 22 districts, has enabled local artisans to reach global markets.
Previously reliant on physical tourism, weavers are now utilizing social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to sell their traditional textiles. This technological shift is helping to preserve cultural heritage while providing new economic opportunities for the local community.
