SUMCO faces rising AI demand despite recent financial losses

SUMCO, a major Japanese manufacturer of high-purity silicon wafers, is seeing significant market activity despite recent financial volatility. Originally established in 1999 as a joint venture between Sumitomo Metal Industries and Mitsubishi Materials, the company has evolved into an independent specialist in the semiconductor materials sector.

While the company has faced recent challenges, including operating losses in the first half of the 2026 fiscal year due to heavy equipment investments, analysts are optimistic. SMBC Nikko Securities has raised its target price for SUMCO from 5,000 yen to 5,500 yen, maintaining an 'Outperform' rating. Analysts suggest that increasing AI investment is driving a surge in demand for silicon wafers, potentially leading to significant price increases due to tight supply and demand conditions.

Historically, SUMCO's business has been highly sensitive to market cycles. While its capital ties to its founding companies have largely dissolved, its commercial ties remain, with Sumitomo Corporation accounting for approximately 27% of its sales. Analysts predict the company's performance may bottom out this fiscal year, with the potential for record-high consolidated operating income by fiscal year 2029.
