Sumela Monastery denied August 15 service for third consecutive year

For the third consecutive year, the historic Panagia Sumela Monastery in Trabzon will not host the Divine Liturgy for the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15. Turkish authorities have denied permission for the service on this specific date, a decision reportedly influenced by nationalist concerns regarding the anniversary of the Fall of Trebizond in 1461.

To mitigate tensions, authorities have permitted a service to take place on August 23, the date the Church observes the feast's commemoration. However, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will not preside over the August 23 service at Sumela; instead, he will lead a liturgy at the ruins of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni in Artaki, Kyzikos.

The monastery, which was closed for 80 years before reopening in 2010, has seen 12 services held since that time. Recent restoration work and the requirement for special permits for pilgrims have also impacted attendance at the site.
