Sumelys Wurmfarm promotes sustainability in Berlin-Spandau

Sumelys Wurmfarm is a community-based circular economy project located in Berlin-Spandau. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative uses earthworms to transform organic waste, such as kitchen scraps, garden waste, and newspaper, into high-quality humus.

The project aims to make sustainability tangible by allowing children, youth, and local residents to participate in the entire process of collecting, preparing, and processing waste. By acting as biological reactors, the worms digest organic material and excrete nutrient-rich castings while aerating the compost through their movement.

The long-term goal of the project is to foster a community network where schools and families can engage in practical environmental education and take responsibility for local waste management.
