Sumenep fishermen return home after detention in Australia

Nine fishermen from Tonduk Village, Raas District, Sumenep, have returned to their hometown after being detained by Australian security authorities. The fishermen were reportedly apprehended in the Northern Territory for allegedly violating maritime boundaries while searching for sea cucumbers and shark fins.

The Sumenep Regency Government, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Baznas, facilitated the repatriation. The group was picked up in Denpasar, Bali, and transported via land to Jangkar Port in Situbondo before continuing by sea to Raas Island.

While the repatriation process is complete for these nine individuals, the legal status regarding potential fines in Australia remains unresolved, as the local government lacks the authority to handle diplomatic or legal matters. Additionally, officials are still communicating regarding the repatriation of 13 other fishermen who were detained by Australian authorities in early October.
