Homeowners advised to keep windows closed during peak summer heat

Experts warn that opening windows during the hottest part of the day can raise indoor temperatures instead of cooling homes. The most effective ventilation occurs in the early morning or late evening when outdoor air is cooler than inside.

During heat waves, keeping windows shut between roughly 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and drawing curtains or blinds on sun‑exposed sides helps block solar radiation. Some experts also suggest leaving a slight opening in blinds or slats to allow airflow without letting direct sunlight heat the glass.

Additional low‑cost measures include limiting the use of heat‑producing appliances, turning off unnecessary electronics, and using reflective aluminum foil on windows to bounce sunlight away, provided the foil is applied on the exterior side to avoid overheating the glass.

Together, these practices can reduce reliance on air‑conditioning and improve indoor comfort during prolonged periods of high outdoor temperatures.
