Black Forest sees rise in ‘Coolcation’ tourism from Southern Europe

The Black Forest is experiencing a rise in tourism from Spain and Italy, driven by a trend known as ‘Coolcation’. Travelers from these Mediterranean regions are increasingly seeking cooler climates to escape summer heatwaves. Statistics from the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg show that Spanish overnight stays in the region reached nearly 199,000 last year, a 64 percent increase since 2015. Italian visitors accounted for approximately 194,500 overnight stays.

In the High Black Forest, the growth is even more pronounced, with Spanish overnight stays increasing by up to 46 percent annually in recent years. Tourism boards have responded to this shift by launching targeted marketing campaigns in Spain focusing on the ‘Coolcation’ concept, highlighting the region’s forests, lakes, and higher altitudes as a respite from the heat.

Separately, the Summer Breeze Open Air festival has commenced its 2026 edition, featuring a partial solar eclipse during performances. Looking ahead to its 30th anniversary in 2027, organizers have already confirmed 63 bands. A major highlight for the jubilee year will be the ‘Summer Breeze Legends & Orchestra’ show, featuring the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra and various guest stars performing metal classics.
