Summer gastroenteritis risk in Campo de Gibraltar: food, pools and hygiene
Dr. Andrea Fregosi, head of emergency services at Hospital Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar, warns that rising summer temperatures increase cases of gastroenteritis in the region. Breaks in the cold chain, inadequate hand hygiene and contamination of food or water are the main drivers.
High‑risk foods include eggs and dishes containing them, meat, fish, seafood, unpasteurised dairy and poorly washed salads. Swimming pools become another transmission route when water is ingested or users neglect hygiene measures.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable. Maintaining proper refrigeration, thorough hand‑washing, safe food handling and correct pool maintenance are essential to prevent infection and dehydration.
