Summer health: Managing food poisoning and digestive issues

Common summer health issues such as food poisoning and constipation are often linked to changes in routine and improper food handling during travel.

Regarding food poisoning, epidemiological data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) indicates that responsibility often lies not with restaurants, which are subject to strict hygiene controls, but with improper management of the cold chain and domestic food storage. Bacteria like Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Escherichia coli thrive in the 'danger zone' between 5°C and 60°C, where microbial numbers can double every 20 minutes. Common causes include leaving groceries in hot vehicles or failing to use thermal bags.

Additionally, vacation-related constipation is frequently caused by changes in diet, irregular schedules, dehydration, and reduced physical activity. Maintaining hydration and consuming fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are recommended natural remedies to restore intestinal regularity.
