Summer health risks: Physical injuries and environmental hazards

Summer activities and vacations present various health risks, ranging from physical injuries to environmental exposure. Experts warn that performing manual labor at holiday homes, such as gardening or home repairs, can lead to musculoskeletal issues. Physical therapist Giorgos Goudévinos notes that sudden exertion in an untrained body can cause spinal injuries, knee damage from prolonged squatting, and ankle sprains due to uneven terrain. Additionally, repetitive use of tools can result in tendonitis or muscle aches in the elbows and wrists.

Environmental factors also pose significant threats. Medical professionals from Metropolitan Hospital highlight the dangers of extreme heat and dehydration, which can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke, particularly in vulnerable groups like the elderly, infants, and those with chronic illnesses. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend maintaining hydration, wearing light clothing, and avoiding intense activity during peak temperatures. Furthermore, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation remains a concern, with UVB rays causing sunburn and DNA damage, while UVA rays contribute to premature skin aging.
